When you step on the accelerator, your Cadillac responds typically with smooth and peppy acceleration. However, if you notice one day that the car doesn't seem responsive when you press the gas pedal, there may be a problem with the car's mechanical system. Often, components in the engine and surrounding parts can get dirty or contaminated, which affects the entire vehicle's performance. You may also notice a decrease in fuel efficiency. Before contacting a mechanic for service, you may be able to pinpoint the issue based on these four common causes.
Dirty Oxygen Sensor
Dirt, debris, and other contaminants are some of your car engine's worst nightmares. Dirt and dust can easily make their way into various parts of your car and, in turn, impact its performance. One component that is vulnerable to contamination is the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor regulates the fuel that your vehicle uses. It helps to maintain a correct balance of fuel and air for optimal performance. When the sensor breaks or becomes dirty, it can't monitor the engine's mixture of fuel and air. The car may not accelerate as quickly when that happens. A similar part called the mass airflow sensor can also get coated with dust and debris. A dirty airflow sensor will need to be cleaned off by our mechanics to not interfere with your car's performance and acceleration.
Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor
Another vital sensor that controls the car's performance and engine health is the throttle position sensor or the TPS. The throttle position sensor measures the opening angle of the throttle valve. The sensor instructs the engine how to perform by sending information through the engine's computer. If the sensor cannot detect the throttle opening angle, the engine won't perform as well since it is not getting a clear signal.
Clogged Fuel Filter
The fuel filter is one of two filters that help keep the engine clean and running smoothly. The fuel filter's primary task is to filter out harmful contaminants to avoid getting into the engine. The fuel filter can get clogged, which means that sufficient volumes of clean fuel don't get to the engine. The filter will need replacement.
Dirty Air Filter
The air filter helps keep contaminants out of the air that the engine takes in. Like the fuel filter, the air filter can get clogged with debris. It will need to be cleaned or replaced to restore proper function.
